About this organisation

Nanotechnology has been identified in the Birmingham University Research Strategy as a Key Enabling Technology.  The reasons for this are clear, and include:

The shrinkage of electronic components has already taken them to sub 100 nm.

  1. Nanoparticles are being commercially prepared and sold for numerous applications, ranging from bio-labelling to chemical sensing.

  2. Analytical techniques have been (EM, STM, AFM) and continue to be developed that can interrogate the natural world on increasingly smaller length scales with ever increasing degrees of sophistication.

  3. Many treatments for diseased conditions are being researched and developed around the world that utilise aspects of nanoscience and nanotechnology.  For example, gene delivery carriers for cures for cancer rely upon nanoparticle formation, and solid tumours can be regressed by their uptake of magenetic and infra-red susceptible nanoparticles.

  4. Thus, nanoscience and the technology that follows will play an ever increasingly large part in our daily lives.

Birmingham University is at the forefront of many nanoscience and nanotechnology activities.
